Type 2 Diabetes

Challenges and Solutions

Type 2 diabetes a huge burden on the United States health care system. As the number of people developing type 2 diabetes rise, it is projected to reach 15 per 1000 people by 2050 (Morgan,2017). Although there has been many new developments of treatment, type 2 diabetes, managing and sustaining a normal glucose levels are still challenging for most. In older adults diabetes is a disabling disease because of vascular complications, coexisting multiple comorbidities, and increased prevalence of cognitive and physical dysfunction (Morgan,2017). Rising cost in food and health care is a challenge for a lot of people who suffer from type 2 diabetes. Many Medicare Part D plans have resorted to cost-sharing, formulary restrictions, prior authorizations, step therapy, and other risk-sharing approaches(Morgan,2017).

Challenges and Issues for Family Members

Family members of a person with type 2 diabetes can face many issues and challenges. They have to bear the emotional strain as well as play the role of a support system for their loved one. Sometimes support from family can come across as negative or intrusive by the person with type 2 diabetes. Close relatives often describe discomfort with the perceived need to monitor the person with diabetes as well as confusion about their role in diabetes care; these feelings often result in unintended family conflict (Grabowski, Anderson & Willaing, 2017). Relatives of people who have type 2 diabetes have a significantly higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Some other challenges family members may experience while living in the household with someone with type 2 diabetes are (Baig, Benitex, Quinn, & Burnet, 2015):

  • how food is prepared
  • type of food consumed
  • time away from work for medical visits
  • reprioritizing finances

Mainstreaming the Child/Adolescent

Type 2 diabetes is classified as a disability. The ADA requires employers to provide adjustments or modifications for applicants and employees with disabilities to enjoy equal employment opportunities (US Equal employment Opportunity Commission,2013). For example, an employer may give the employee extra time to check blood sugar, take medications, or go to doctor appointments. Children living with diabetes experience the same symptoms as adults with type 2 diabetes. Click on the link to learn about how a teen manages her type 2 diabetes.

Societal Awareness and Accommodations

Type 2 diabetes is prevalent throughout the United State with millions of people undiagnosed. Since prediabetes and type 2 diabetes can be prevented, it is good to spread education on best practices for preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes. November is diabetes awareness month in the United States and around the world. During this time organizations and individuals spread awareness about type 2 diabetes and give information on managing and prevention ( Dierks, nd.) The International Diabetes Federation celebrates World Diabetes Day on every November 14th, which is celebrated globally.
